Diaphragm Design Software -Sidelap Fasteners

Hilti Profis prompts the user for a sidelap fastener spacing. Not only is this not how many engineers specify sidelap fasteners nor how the SDI calculates diaphragm strength, the module itself does not allow the user to control the spacing of the first structural framing member from the wall (support). For example, pick a joist spacing of 6'-4" and a sidelap spacing of 76". The first sidelap fastener will not be at the framing member (per the graphics), but some amount from the first member. Entering different sidelap fastener spacings can yield situations (at least graphically) where the quantity of fasteners in the first span from support to first framing member are different from framing member to framing member. Adjusting this spacing can yield a range of different capacities for the deck while the quantity of sidelap fasteners per span is still only 1 or 2 or whatever. It's very unclear from the graphics, user input options, and calculations what exactly is being calculated and warrants further clarity or thorough calculations from the output.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the feedback on the Diaphragm Design module in PROFIS Engineering. This information will be shared with Hilti's software team as the software continues to develop.

For more information on how calculations are performed, please see the PROFIS Engineering Diaphragm Design Guide on Hilti's website. Generating a long report for your design will also provide additional calculation details.

Regards,
Matthew
