Can an EZ screw anchor that is installed as a temporary anchor be removed and the hole be redrilled and replaced with an adhesive anchor? If so, what are the parameters? Same size anchor, one 1/8" larger? Other?
Additionally, can the screw anchor be removed and replaced in the same hole?
Hi Sterling,
Removal of a screw anchor followed by use of an adhesive anchor system in that same hole would ultimately be at the engineer of record’s discretion, as all testing performed for Hilti’s adhesive anchor systems are in freshly drilled holes. Engineers have considered drilling a larger hole to follow with use of an adhesive anchor in the same location, but special consideration to the sizing would need to be given to account for the threading caused by the previous screw anchor.
In regard to the reusability of Hilti’s screw anchors, an important distinction needs to be made between the Kwik HUS-EZ and the Kwik HUS screw anchors:
Kwik HUS-EZ: Anchor cannot be reused, suitable for cracked and uncracked concrete, ICC-ES Evaluation Report (ESR-3027)
Kwik HUS: Anchor can be reused, but only in a new hole, suitable for uncracked concrete only, no ICC-ES Evaluation Report
If you are wanting to reuse the same hole, an option you may want to consider is the Kwik-X dual action anchor system which can be re-used in the same bore hole once. The re-usability of the Kwik-X one time in the same borehole is not covered by the ESR-5065, but it is supported by Hilti's testing. For more information on the Kwik-X system, please reference this Product Technical Guide Excerpt.
All the best,
Sinan
