Mastering Subframing in Rainscreen Facades: Balancing Performance, Sustainability, and Durability – Thermal Strand

Mastering Subframing in Rainscreen Facades: Balancing Performance, Sustainability, and Durability – Thermal Strand

Specifying more insulation does not, by itself, establish how a rainscreen wall will perform; the subframing that supports the cladding also creates heat-flow paths through the thermal enclosure. This session makes those paths visible, examining how support materials, geometry, and repetition influence thermal bridging, effective wall performance, and localized condensation risk. Practical calculations and a step-by-step evaluation workflow help participants move beyond nominal insulation R-value, assess the contribution of the support system, and identify the assumptions that must remain consistent across thermal models, details, specifications, and proposed substitutions. Connecting the Thermal Strand to the Performance Knot, the session shows how to pursue thermal targets in harmony with structural demands and installation requirements—so that the wall being evaluated is the wall being specified and built.
