Mastering Subframing in Rainscreen Facades -Balancing Performance, Sustainability, and Durability – Structural Strand Part 1

Mastering Subframing in Rainscreen Facades - Balancing Performance, Sustainability, and Durability – Structural Strand Part 1

A rainscreen façade must support the cladding and transfer loads to the building while allowing movement where the design requires it, a distinction that begins with a clearly defined load path. This session follows gravity, wind, and applicable seismic loads from the panels through their attachments, rails, brackets, and anchorage to the supporting structure, connecting code-based requirements to the details architects and consultants review. Practical examples explain panel attachment strategies, the distinct roles of fixed and sliding connections, and how thermal expansion and restraint influence system behavior. Within the Performance Knot, participants will learn to harmonize these structural decisions with thermal performance and constructability, translating load-path and movement assumptions into clear design criteria, coordinated details, and submittals that can be meaningfully evaluated.
