Mastering Subframing in Rainscreen Facades-Balancing Performance, Sustainability, & Durability – Constructability Strand Pt 1
A façade’s panel pattern may be resolved long before the support layout behind it, yet those two designs must work together for the architectural intent to survive installation. This session examines how panel orientation, one-layer versus two-layer subframing, and the coordination of panel, rail, and building joints influence movement, load transfer, thermal performance, and installation sequence. Through practical examples, participants will identify details that can unintentionally restrain movement, introduce unnecessary complexity, or leave critical coordination decisions unresolved until construction. Applying the Performance Knot, architects, engineers, and consultants will learn how to harmonize structural and thermal requirements with constructability early in the design process, establishing coordinated layouts, movement provisions, and responsibilities before unresolved details become field problems.
