Why are the capacities of anchors with HY-270 into hollow brick higher than solid brick?

Why are the capacities of anchors with HY-270 into hollow brick higher than solid brick?

There are different capacities and edge distances/etc in the tables and in profis for anchors into Hollow Brick walls and Solid Brick walls. I am curious why the values are much higher for Hollow Brick walls and why tension loads are allowed for hollow brick construction but tension loads are not allowed for solid brick unless there is the bent option. Looking at the Hilti design guide it refers me to ESR 4143 and ESR 4144. Reading both of these still provides no clarity for the difference. Can you please let me know why hollow brick construction (with a minimum of 2 wythes) has more strength for hilti anchors than a solid brick wall (with a minimum of 3 wythes)?

Hi Ryan,

HIT-HY 270 may be subjected to both tension and shear loads in multi-wythe solid and hollow brick, where published values for HIT-HY 270 into solid and hollow brick were determined through Hilti's supportive testing process. Depending on the size of threaded rods you are designing with, the allowable load value for HIT-HY 270 may be higher in either solid or hollow brick. For more information, please see Tables 15 and 16 in Section 3.2.4 of Hilti's Anchor Fastening Technical Guide.

Matthew
