What adhesive anchor is recommended to install thru solid stone and concrete back-up?

I have some lightly loaded anchors (1000 lbs in tension) that I would like to install in an adhesive into an existing concrete beam. The wall that I am installing into is a 100 year old exterior wall with 9" (nominal) roughened limestone that is solid with a 10" thick (minimum) concrete beam. The anchors that I am inquiring about are noted as "threaded rod set in epoxy w/ 16" embed" on the attached detail.

I do not know for certain, but I anticipate that there may be a small air gap 1" or so between stone and concrete. Do you recommend any special considerations be taken for installing HY 200 into the concrete to avoid losing adhesive into the gap? Can a long nozzle be employed (10" plus) to ensure adhesive is placed into concrete? Is a mesh sleeve a good idea just to avoid losing adhesive into a possible gap?

Those anchors are experiencing tension only, and embedment is selected such that the anchor develops all strength into the concrete. Any strength that may occur from the stone is neglected?

Hi Brett,

Hilti does not have test data available for installing anchors through multiple base materials, base materials that age, or into natural stone. However, you can reference the attached University of Catania (Italy) 2014 study on the behavior of post-installed adhesive anchors in natural stone. We have seen the HIT-RE 500 V3 adhesive anchoring system considered for applications into natural stone in the past and the study is shared to help in the process of making an engineering judgement on your application.

In regard to the air gap between the stone and the concrete, the only adhesive Hilti has performed testing with a mesh sleeve is the HIT-HY 270 masonry adhesive anchor. The use of a mesh sleeve with the HIT-HY 200 V3 or HIT-RE 500 V3 adhesive is outside the scope of Hilti’s testing and is not approved for use with either adhesive.

If you have any further questions, please reach out to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com.

Best,
Mia
