Wedge Anchor Maximum Hole depth

Wedge Anchor Maximum Hole depth

During installation I witnessed a third party installer drilling the holes for wedge anchors and it appeared that the installer was drilling the holes all the way through the slab on grade (6inch slab on grade). Would this cause any issues or reduction in concrete break out for the wedge anchor?

Hi Kyle,

Wedge anchors are tested with a minimum concrete thickness and thus installing wedge anchors into a through hole is out of the scope of testing. Installing into a through hole may impact the effective embedment depth (may be installed deeper than what it has been tested for). Additionally, when torqueing the anchor the likelihood of splitting increases when installing into a through hole. Ultimately, all design decisions are up to the engineer of record and on-site testing is recommended.

Emily
