Wedge anchor in existing hole

Wedge anchor in existing hole

I have a project with a Redhead expansion anchor that is not rated for cracked concrete. I was going to replace it with the correct Hilti anchor. Can the old anchor be removed and replaced with a Hilti Wedge anchor and still meet the design capacities?

Hi Thomas,

The old wedge anchor may be removed, typically by core drilling around the anchor, however, it is not recommended to install a new wedge anchor in the same location with the same diameter. This condition has not been tested by Hilti and the design capacity will likely be effected. This topic is further elaborated on in a previous Ask Hilti response.

Ultimately, all design decisions are at the discretion of the Engineer of Record (EOR) on the project. Onsite testing is recommended if the installation parameters do not align with the published technical data.

Best,
Sam
