Use of pins for steel deck fastening to steel bar joists.

Use of pins for steel deck fastening to steel bar joists.

Regarding pins for deck fastening to bar joist, I understand minimum supporting steel thickness is required to be 0.125". As bar joist chords can be thinner than this, is there a design methodology for utilizing both screws and pins? If so, how is determining supporting material addressed in the installation instructions? We often find that when Hilti pins are specified as an alternate to welding no party can address this issue.

Hi Aaron,

Unfortunately, Hilti does not have any information on the use of a combination of X-HSN or X-ENP frame fasteners in combination with screw frame fasteners for decking applications. The thickness requirements for Hilti's frame fasteners can be found on page 159 of Hilti's Direct Fastening Product Technical Guide.

Ashley

Hi Ashley, Thank you for the response. In doing some research I have found manufacturers of steel bar joist may use chord material as thin as 7/64(0.109). Would it be a fair statement to say that Hilti X-HSN and X-ENP are not an option when bar joist chord thickness is 7/64(0.109) or greater? Thanks
