ULC Design for conduit penetration through concrete block.

Hi, I came across this existing breach in a fire separation on a project where 3 conduit penetrate an existing block wall (not solid) I have attached photos for reference and scale. Is there a ULC design that will work, or do I need an engineered solution? Thank you.

Hello Brian,

Please be aware that you will need to submit for engineering judgments on both applications. Please see below for further details.

The pipes appear to be arranged in a single row; however, there is more annular space than WJ1202 can accommodate. Because of this we will need to rule out a sealant only solution and go with a mineral wool and sealant solution. Also, we will not have any systems that will accommodate CMU walls that are not solid or grout filled. The mineral wool within the opening will require an additional callout for the backing material around the perimeter. Please formally submit for an engineering judgment and we can take care of your application needs there.

Unfortunately, we do not have a system for multiple electrical boxes. Please formally submit for an engineering judgment on this application as well.

Please see below for information on how to sign up to the Hilti Construction Platform where you can submit your engineering judgment requests.

We are proud to announce the launch of the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP), our company’s new engineering service website. This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Design needs. Instead of emailing a PDF form for a request, the platform enables you to create new Engineering Judgment (EJ) requests, submit revisions to previously completed EJs or connect with an FPE on a question. HCP also enables you to track the status of your request.

You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: http://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or http://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) If you have any questions or require assistance navigating the platform, please call Customer Service for help at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada.)

Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below.

Hilti Firestop Selector App – Google Play Store

If you have any questions, please reach out to our customer service team at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada) for assistance.

_________________________

Because of the numerous field conditions encountered, it is not always possible to identify a firestop system that has been tested / classified by a nationally recognized independent testing laboratory (such as Underwriters Laboratories, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, Factory Mutual, Intertek/Omega Point, etc.). In such a case, an Engineering Judgment (“EJ”) or Firestop Custom Detail (“FCD”) may be appropriate. An EJ/FCD represents a firestop solution that would be expected to pass the stated ratings and requirements if tested.
All Hilti EJ’s/FCD’s are designed in accordance with the International Firestop Council (“IFC”) guidelines. These EJ’s/FCD’s are designed by our experienced degreed fire protection technicians using, as the basis for our opinion:
• relevant 3rd-party testing in accordance with ASTM E-84, ASTM E-119, ASTM E-136, ASTM E-814, ASTM E-1966, ASTM E-2307, CAN/ULC-S115-11, UL 263, UL 723, UL 1479, UL 2079, or ASTM E-2837 • wide-ranging related internal testing of our firestop products, and • extensive knowledge and experience of the performance characteristics of Hilti firestop products, and firestopping technology generally.
Pursuant to IFC guidelines, each EJ/FCD is intended for one specific jobsite, since even slight variances from one application to the next can affect system performance.
Best Regards,

Kevin Riechers
