Steel column in CMU wall

Steel column in CMU wall

We have a steel column in a CMU wall. The column is sprayed on the front and back side (exposed) with intumescent fire proofing. The sides of the column have the cmu wall built flush to the column. In order not to have to paint the sides that are covered by the CMU wall with intumescent paint, can we use a joint system?

Hi Randy we would need to take a look at that in an engineering judgement (EJ). Please let us know if you are using Fire Finish 120+ or All Weather High Build when you submit the EJ. Also the wall will need to have a rating equal to the steel you are trying to protect.
Thank you
