Replace Existing Screw Anchors

Replace Existing Screw Anchors

Analyzing a connection designed by a previous engineering firm. Previous engineer used 1/2" KH-EZ anchors embedded 2.16" and Profis is saying that the existing embedment will fail with our new shear loading, but a deeper embedment would pass. I'm guessing it's not easy as just unscrewing the existing anchors, drilling deeper holes, and screwing in the new anchors; but is there a process to swap those out, whether it's going up to 5/8" or using an epoxy anchor like the KHC? Or would we need to just leave the existing anchors be and add additional anchors?

Hi Ethan,

Once the KH-EZ is removed, it is not permissible to use the same KH-EZ that was previously installed. If the solution will need to be covered by the ESR documentation, you may want to consider increasing the diameter of the KH-EZ to 5/8" for the new anchoring point. Another solution would be the use of the Kwik-X system which consists of the KHC capsule and the KH-EZ. Final selection of the anchoring system will be up to the Engineer of Record on the project.

If you would like to discuss the application further, please reach out to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com or feel free to give us a call at 877-749-6337.
