Looking for some guidance on penetrations through a rated steel column. the 5x5 tube steel column is exposed with a 2HR intumescent coating, and conduit is being proposed to route through it - the opening would be approximately 1 1/2" in diameter. Not sure if a firestopping system like WL8093c would work in this condition or if another firestop sealant would suffice. Additionally, direct fastening of storefront to this column is being considered.
Hello,
If the column is coated with Hilti fireproofing (FF120+ or AWHB), we would not allow penetrations through the steel member as all of our systems and EJs require the steel to be solid throughout. If it isn't, you would need to consult with the fireproofing manufacturer, since this is not technically a firestop application. Please feel free to call us at 1 800 879 8000 for any further questions.
Thank you,
