Minimum effective embedment detph

Is it possible to use an anchor less than the minimum embedment depth?

A contractor wants to use a larger S.S. using Hilti HY-200 from 1/2" to 3/4". The original effective specified embed depth is 75mm. The depth of concrete is only 5". Strength-wise, the 1/2" rod works comfortably, is there any issues with upsizing the rod? The effective embedment is less than the minimum as originally noted in the design guides.

Hi Kenneth,

Per ACI 318-14 Section 17.3.2.3, post-installed adhesive anchors are limited to a minimum effective embedment depth (hef) of 4da and a maximum effective embedment depth (hef) of 20da. For effective embedment depths lower or higher, the engineer on the project would need to consider using engineering judgment or on-site evaluation to account for potential variability in performance.

Regards,
Paris
