Table 1 of ESR 3027 shows a 6 3/4” minimum concrete thickness for 1/2” diameter KH-EZ anchors with 4 1/4” nominal embed but figure 12 of that ICC report shows only 3/4” clearance needed beyond the end of the anchor hole depth for installations into the soffit of fill over metal deck. Which minimum concrete thickness should be used for anchorage design?
It is a great question Derek. If you are anchoring into regular concrete the minimum edge distance, spacing, hole depth, etc... for a 1/2" KH-EZ at a nominal embedment of 4-1/4" are right there in Table 1. The edge and spacing tests in Table 1 for that embedment depth were done in a 6-3/4" minimum thickness slab. For Concrete over Metal Deck the detail in Figure 12 refers to the values from Table 5 and 8. Footnote 3 from Figure 12 says "Minimum concrete thickness above upper flute for KH-EZ 1/2" diameter is 3-1/4"". The embedment depth of 4-1/4" is only allowed when installed in the lower flute in this case. Additionally, the load values for shear and tension should also come from Table 5 when using a Figure 12 installation.
