Large Diameter Adhesive Anchor Question

Large Diameter Adhesive Anchor Question

I have a project in California where I am designing anchorage for battery storage equipment. The equipment is anchored with angle brackets that have 1-1/2" diameter holes (see screenshot below). Anchors do not need to be placed in every anchor hole. Because of the anchor hole diameter, I want to use a 1-3/8" diameter anchor because that size of anchor will fit snugly in the angle bracket. I had a couple of questions on this type of application using Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3.

  1. I know the HAS-R S.S. 316 anchors can only be ordered in diameter sizes up to 1". If I just specify a standard 316 S.S. All Thread anchor rod would that work with this adhesive system or does the HAS-R anchor need to be used?
  2. For epoxying a 1-3/8" diameter anchor what diameter hole size should be drilled in the concrete and do you have any recommendations for how to accomplish this anchor installation with Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3?

Hello Aaron,

As you mention, A 1-3/8“ diameter threaded rod is outside of Hilti’s published technical data in ESR-3814 for HIT-RE 500 V3. However, Hilti has performed supplemental testing for these larger elements, which is documented in this Technical Bulletin. Table 2 of the bulletin gives nominal drill bit diameters depending on the diameter of the element. As this is outisde of the published ESR-3814, reference of the data would be at the judgement of the Engineer of Record.

In general, when operating with ESR-3814’s tested parameters, Section 3.2.5.1 outlines the definition of “Threaded Steel Rods“ that would be applicable to the scope of the report.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com.

Best,
Sinan
