Is there any justification to use a 3/4in dia KH EZ bolt in 5in of concrete?

Is there any justification to use a 3/4in dia KH EZ bolt in 5in of concrete?

We have cases where we MUST use a 3/4" bolt and the concrete thickness is only 5in:

  • 5in slab
  • 5in wythe in precast insulated panel

The loads are not significant, but PROFIS will not allow the design to continue.

I wanted to reach out to see what we can achieve in a 5in slab with a KH EZ screw anchor, given it must be 3/4"

Hi Brian,

Thank you for reaching out. For the 3/4" KH-EZ, the minimum published concrete thickness is 6 inches, per Table 1 of ESR-3027. Hilti would not recommend installation outside of our tested conditions, as the risk for failure could increase. Insufficient concrete thickness can increase the risk of concrete splitting or spalling. The decision to install outside of Hilti's published testing data would be at the discretion of the Engineer of Record on the project.

Regards,
Katelyn
