In your opinion, why are we not finding the Special Inspection requirements being enforced in the geopraphic areas that have adopted the 2012/2015 IBC?

Hello David,

The requirements for firestop special inspection were first added in the 2012 edition of the IBC. The process takes time to fully mature as more and more jurisdictions adopt 2012 or later editions. In addition more and more qualified firestop special inspectors are being trained as well as further training & education programs for the AHJ inspectors. Compared to just several years ago the AHJ community is much better about enforcing the special inspection requirements as well as approving qualified special inspectors. We acknowledge there are still AHJ’s not enforcing the code prescribed special inspection requirements of the IBC, however we have education programs that can assist in educating. If you know of any AHJ’s not enforcing the firestop special inspection requirements please let us know and we can send out our local specialist for follow-up discussions.

Regards,

Stephen S.

Cities we are not seeing the IBC Inspection Code enforced include:

Atlanta Metro area, Charlotte metro area, Raleigh-Durham metro area, Cincinnati, Nashville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Dallas/Ft. Worth (a small handful are enforcing however not on a wide spread basis), Houston metro area, San Antonio metro area, Austin metro area, Tulsa & Denver metro area. Every city Alpha has a presence we are not experiencing the Code requirements for 3rd Party inspection being implemented. Pretty sure they have all adopted the 2012 IBC too.
