We are enclosing an energy storage system (UPS) room in an existing building. It requires a 2-hr separation to protect the building occupants. The room is the fire side, below the ceiling. Using UL Designs U419 for the walls and I516 for the ceiling membrane (horizontal shaftwall assembly) hung below the floor system (bar joist/concrete on metal fluted deck) above. There are two exposed steel W8x31 columns at the room perimeter which need to penetrate the ceiling membrane. Can Hilti detail WL 7188b be used horizontally, perhaps with modifications? Note: Access to install and inspect firestop sealant above the penetration assembly will not be possible. Let me know if you need more information.

Unfortunately, W-L-7188 cannot be used for horizontal assembly as it was designed and tested in gypsum wall assembly only. However, we can address your application through an Engineering Judgment which will be a custom detail showing your exact application with the firestop components required to maintain the stated ratings based on W-L-7188.
