Firestop Foam CP 620

Please advise if CP 620 meets the requirements of UL 263 or ASTM E119 for horizontal wall assemblies. The product literature indicates that the product was tested in accordance with UL 1479 and ASTM E814; however it is silent on the foregoing requirements. Our city building department will not permit us to use the foam for penetrations in horizontal wall assemblies without confirmation. Thank you.

Hello Chris! Thank you for checking out ASK Hilti!

You are correct - Hilti's CP 620 Foam is a firestop product that is tested in accordance with UL 1479 and ASTM E814. However, the product itself does not restore the rating of a rated assembly, but must be installed per a tested and listed system in accordance with UL 1479 and ASTM E814. UL 263 and ASTM E119 is the test standard for fire-resistance rated assemblies and not for firestop assemblies. This means our firestop products and systems would not meet UL 263 and ASTM E119 test standards.

Essentially, the fire-resistance rated assembly is tested in accordance with UL 263 and ASTM E119, but once that assembly is penetrated (pipe/cable/conduit/etc) - a firestop system is required and that system is tested per UL 1479 and ASTM E814. This requirement can be found within the applicable building codes (IBC or NFPA).

If you are looking for a tested and listed firestop system for a horizontal gypsum assembly, unfortunately we do not have a system with CP 620 Foam. However, we can review and address your application through an Engineering Judgment which will be a custom detail showing your exact application with the firestop components required to maintain the stated ratings (see below).

We are proud to announce the launch of the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP), our company’s new engineering service website. This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Design needs. Instead of emailing a PDF form for a request, the platform enables you to create new Engineering Judgment (EJ) requests, submit revisions to previously completed EJs or connect with an FPE on a question. HCP also enables you to track the status of your request.

You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: http://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or http://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) If you have any questions or require assistance navigating the platform, please call Customer Service for help at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada.)

Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below.
