Fire Barrier Voids at Intersection

8 and 12" 2 hour rated fire barriers (interior partitions) terminating at non-rated steel roof deck. Per NC Building Code, propose to fill void with mineral wool. Please advise to appropriate detail to comply with Section 707.9

707.9 Voids at intersections.
The voids created at the intersection of a fire barrier and a nonfire-resistance-rated roof assembly or a nonfire-resistance-rated
exterior wall assembly shall be filled. A material or system tested in accordance with ASTM E814 and ASTM E119, or batts or
blankets of mineral wool or mineral fiber shall be used to fill the void, and shall be securely installed in or on the intersection for its

the passage of fire and hot gases. Batts or blankets of mineral wool or fiber mineral may be used to fill voids up to 2 inches (50.8 mm).
when the entire width of the fire barrier is filled. The maximum void width for other approved materials shall not be greater than -2
inch (12.7 mm) unless the installation instructions of the material used in the void allow the fill of larger voids.

Thanks in advance

Good afternoon,

There is not a detail that directly addresses this condition but it can be addressed with an Engineering Judgment. Bellow is a link and instructions for requesting an Engineering Judgement:

We are proud to announce the launch of the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP), our company’s new engineering service website. This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Design needs. Instead of emailing a PDF form for a request, the platform enables you to create new Engineering Judgment (EJ) requests, submit revisions to previously completed EJs or connect with an FPE on a question. HCP also enables you to track the status of your request.

You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: http://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or http://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) If you have any questions or require assistance navigating the platform, please call Customer Service for help at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada.)

Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below.

Hilti Firestop Selector App – Google Play Store

Hilti Firestop Selector App – Apple App Store

If you have any questions, please reach out to our customer service team at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada) for assistance.

Best regards,

Thanks you for your response. At this time I was looking to get ahead of a potential review comment. I'm familiar with the EJ process and will utilize if required.
