I need to fascia-mount railing posts on the edge of a 6.5" thick concrete slab supported by a non-grouted CMU wall (see attached drawing). I plan to use HIT-Z-R anchor rods and HIT-HY-200R adhesive. This anchor has a listed minimum edge distance of 1 7/8". My question is how to treat the bottom edge of the slab (which is supported by the CMU wall) in the calculations. All the references I have found talk about distances to an "unsupported edge," whereas in my case the bottom edge is supported by the CMU wall. Any advise on how to treat this case would be appreciated.
Hi Steve,
Unfortunately, Hilti does not have any testing for this specific application. However, in the past, engineers have conservatively considered a cold joint to be an edge of slab and follow the minimum edge distance guidelines. Ultimately, all design decisions are up to the discretion of the engineer of record on the project.
If you would like to discuss the application further, please reach out to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com or give us a call at 877-749-6337.
Regards,
Ashley
