Concrete edge failure in PROFIS

Concrete edge failure in PROFIS

Hello,

When analyzing the 2-anchor system in the attached PDF, shear is applied in the "X" direction only - I made sure the shear in the "Y" direction as zero. However, when I look at the results, concrete edge failure is calculated in the "Y" direction and therefore the anchor does not pass the check. The providing spacing/edge distance should enough for the anchor to pass if the edge failure is calculated in the "X" direction to match the applied shear direction.

Why isn't PROFIS calculating concrete edge failure in the same direction as the applied shear loading?

Thank you

Hi Antonio,

The attached PROFIS Engineering .pdf utilized ACI 318-19 as the design method. Please refer to ACI 318-19, Chapter 17, Section 17.7.2 for concrete breakout strength of anchors in shear. Section 17.7.2.1(d) states that “for anchors located at a corner, the limiting nominal concrete breakout strength shall be calculated for each edge, and the lesser value shall be used". From your attached design, the parallel shear condition governed and the concrete breakout occurred in the y- direction. I’ve further attached Fig. R17.7.2.1d to demonstrate how ca1 and ca2 were selected.

Feel free to send your PROFIS Engineering (.pe) file to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com if you would like for us to review this design further.

Best,
Sam
