Comparing base plate design using CBFEM and AISC Design guide 1

Hi,

I attended the base plate design webinar yesterday. The presenter walked us through the CBFEM design and the 5% plastic strain limit and at the time it felt like it made a lot of sense. When looking at it today I was curious how a design at about 5% strain compared to the AISC Design guide 1 design and the result was nearly 300% overstressed. How does Hilti justify such a massive difference between one of the main accepted base plate design methods?

Also, when looking at the plastic strain and von mises stresses on the base plate in the CBFEM method, should I be looking at ASD or LRFD applied loads? I would naturally be looking at LRFD applied loads for concrete anchorage design but I would think I would want to compare the von mises stresses to ASD applied loads.

Thank you

Hi James,

Here is an article on base plate design methods. For more information on CBFEM see this article.
