We have CFS-S SIL GG (red) installed at pipe penetrations through rated walls (white). After substantial completion, we noticed that this sealant cannot be painted over.
What would you recommend we do if we want to paint over it at this stage?
Also, for future projects, which firestop sealant would you recommend that is paintable?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team to assist you with your firestop engineering needs.
Painting is technically impossible, as there is no adhesion of normal paints on silicone sealants. It is also not recommended to apply a second layer of a different silicone as this influences the final movement capability– (mostly) to the negative. In the future, the Hilti CFS-S Sil GG silicone sealant comes in white, gray, or red. If those colors do not meet your needs, you can switch to the CP 606 Hilti flexible firestop sealant, which can have water based paint applied on top of the sealant.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our customer service team at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada) for assistance.
Best regards,
