Our original design showed steel elevator plates being lag bolted through 2 layers of drywall into blocking behind to maintain a 2 hour rated shaft. Our concern is that with the weight of the elevator being applied to the plates, the drywall behind will crush and create a loose connection for the elevator plate. We are hoping to modify the detail to add a 1x wood member directly behind the steel plate; attaching the steel plate to the wood blocking and fire caulking surrounding the plate to maintain the 2 hour rating. Can you provide a detail that maintains the 2 hour rating while keeping the steel plate attached directly to wood in lieu of through drywall? See details attached. (the steel plate size is 24" x 10" and will occur 3 times/ floor for a total of 21 locations per shaft)
Hello,
Unfortunately, we cannot firestop the wood plate in the opening behind a 1/2" steel plate. If you have 5/8" steel and it is flush with the wall assembly, we may be able to provide an Engineering Judgement (EJ) for it, but 1/2" isn't thick enough for the amount of sealant needed. If you have a condition that you want us to evaluate, you can submit an EJ request and we can take a look for you. I have provided information on how to request one below.
We are proud to announce the launch of the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP), our company’s new engineering service website. This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Design needs. Instead of emailing a PDF form for a request, the platform enables you to create new Engineering Judgment (EJ) requests, submit revisions to previously completed EJs or connect with an FPE on a question. HCP also enables you to track the status of your request.
You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: http://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or http://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) If you have any questions or require assistance navigating the platform, please call Customer Service for help at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada.)
Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below.
