Can FS-One-Max be used on a 1-hour smoke barrier head of wall

The cut sheet calls out FS-One-Max to be used on wall penetrations, I called a Hilti Rep and was told the FS-One-Max could only be used for thur penetrations. But to refer to the wall selector. The contractor submitted FS-One-max for a gypsum wall/concrete deck head of wall condition. Per the Hilti selector wall type HW-S-0039 can use FS-One-Max at a head of wall condition. Please confirm, the FS-One-Max can be used at a 1-hour smoke barrier wall at the head of wall? My project spec calls for a 1-hour smoke barrier to use Hiltis CP 606 because it meets UL 2079 and Astm E 1966. Even if the FS-One_max does not comply with our spec, I need to know that it is sufficient for a head of wall 1-hour smoke barrier condition. Question 2. Can the FS-One-Max product be installed over an existing fire seal? Or does it need to be removed first. Thank you

Tiffany,

Although FS-ONE MAX is typically reserved for penetrations, we do have listed systems that allow FS-ONE MAX to be used in head-of-wall applications. As such, so long as you are matching a listed system exactly, you would have no issues with using FS-ONE MAX. However, if you are varying from the system in any way, then we would need to proceed with an Engineering Judgment (see more info below). As for an existing firestop being installed, you likely will need to remove it, but again, we could potentially evaluate this on an EJ.

An Engineering Judgment (EJ) will be a custom detail showing your exact application with the firestop components required to maintain the stated ratings.

Hilti is proud to announce the launch of our engineering website, the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP). This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Engineering needs, including Engineering Judgment requests. You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: https://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or https://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.)

Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or ask a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
