Brick Pullout Failure Mode for Juliet Balcony

Brick Pullout Failure Mode for Juliet Balcony

I'm working on a Juliet balcony design that attaches to a brick facade. I need to ensure the pullout strength for an anchor, specifically considering the brick pullout limit state. I ran a model in PROFIS and got a 12% utilization for bond, but 0% for the breakout failure mode. Given the minimal balcony load, I think it should be okay but 0% seems like it's not even computing anything. Does anyone know how to compute the brick pullout failure mode?

Hi Mike,

Depending on what design methodology you are using, it won't be possible to specifically calculate the brick failure. If you are designing under allowable stress design (ASD) the anchors are tested until failure and a safety factor is applied. Typically, masonry is designed under ASD considerations. Under ASD, it doesn't matter what is failing, bond, pull out, steel, etc. because ASD doesn't capture different failure methods. For more assistance, please email your .pe file to Hilti's engineering team at hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com.
