I am attaching traffic signs to granite panels (hewn stone). The granite panels are just 2" or 3" thick and act as a facade for the structure behind. What type of anchor should I use that can grip the granite panel with very little embedment? I expect loads to be applied mostly in shear on the anchor. I assume that a concrete screw will not sufficiently interlock with the granite. What types of other options should I consider?
Hi Crosby,
Hilti does not have test data available for installing anchors into natural stone. However, please reference the attached University of Catania (Italy) 2014 study on the behavior of post-installed adhesive anchors in natural stone. HIT-RE 500 V3 is referenced in the study, and the study is shared to aid in making an engineering judgment. Ultimately, all design decisions are at the discretion of the Engineer of Record (EOR) on the project.
If you have any further questions, please reach out to hnatechnicalservices@hilti.com.
Best,
Mia
