5/8in. Structural Plywood to a W8x58 (0.81 in flange thickness) attachment

What is the best way to attach 5/8" structural plywood to a W8 x 58. The catalog from what i see has limitations of up to 1/2" thick steel. Do I need to start using bolts at this point?

Hi Bryan,

Hilti has those limitations for optimum fastening, however it might be possible to fully penetrate and correctly install fasteners into thicker steel. The fastener would just need to be long enough to achieve the minimum embedment depth into the steel. Hilti would recommend doing some test installations to determine what will work and it will ultimately be up to the engineer on the project to decide. If you are unable to get the fasteners to fully install into the thicker steel, where the head of the pin is clamping the plywood, you could try predrilling either the wood, or the wood and part of the steel. You can find more information in Hilti's Direct Fastening Technical Guide here.

Dani
