2 Hour Head of Wall at PEMB

2 Hour Head of Wall at PEMB

I'm looking for a 2-hour rated head of wall detail for a gyp bd and metal stud wall terminating against faced insulation at a pre-engineered metal building roof. The UL detail HW-D-0528 has all the components I need, but not a 2-hour rating. Thanks in advance!

Hello Robin,

Our closest system will be CJ-D-0004 (see attached). Unfortunately given testing in order to achieve the 2 hour rating the roof insulation would need to be removed at the head of wall. Or if the roof insulation must remain in place we can offer a cold smoke seal EJ with no rating. Please see the attached EJ request form for your review.  Your request can be submitted to usfirestopeng@hilti.com and we can begin processing an EJ.

Thank You for choosing Hilti as your Firestop Expert!

Best regards,

Hi Robin, We can provide the detail if you submit an EJ request to us. If you copy and include our conversation here when emailing it to usfirestopeng@hilti.com, one of our engineers will be able to know what to provide. Thanks, Matt

Matt, OK, what would this Cold Smoke Seal detail look like? Is it a UL system or is it just a material note at the top of the wall? Oh, and do I need to submit an EJ to you for this? Thanks,

Hi Robin, We can definitely provide a detail. But with the insulation remaining below the roof (which is ideal for the vapor barrier, HVAC, etc.) we can only provide a cold smoke seal solution for 2 hours or greater. Several AHJs have accepted this given most of the time there's nothing above the roof that requires protection from fire. Thanks, Matt

Matt- Hi, thanks for your quick reply. I'm not exactly sure the CJ-D-0004 is what I'm looking for, we will be parallel to the roof flutes, not perpendicular. And this is not really metal decking its metal roofing panels. I think we do need to keep the insulation. This is an existing building and we don't have the scope to do major modifications. Would something like the HW-D-0528 not work for this situation? I saw an question on the forum from last year where someone asked a similar situation and they were told the HW-D-0528 could be adjusted to 2 or 3 hour ratings with a EJ. Is that still the case? Thanks again for your speedy response.
