2 Hour fire rated stair enclosure

2 Hour fire rated stair enclosure

We have an existing 1 hour fire rated gypsum board stair enclosure that we need to make 2 hour fire rated. The surrounding gypsum board walls are shaft walls in some areas and standard 6" metal studs with 5/8" gyp on both sides in other areas. We would like to add gypsum board on the stair side of the enclosure in accordance with standard UL wall designs; however, there is a stair stringer that interrupts the continuity of the enclosure as well as a 1 hour fire rated concrete floor that interrupts the 2 hour required enclosure. Attached are details of two different conditions - where the wall is interrupted by the stair stringer and another where the concrete floor slab interrupts the enclosure. Are you able to provide an engineering judgement for these conditions to maintain a 2 hour fire rated enclosure? There are 4 details as I drew up each condition based on the use of a shaft wall and standard 6" stud wall. Let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information.

Hello we can look at firestopping the stair stringer in an Engineering Judgement (EJ) - Please see below on how to submit for an EJ.

Thank you,

We are proud to announce the launch of the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP), our company’s new engineering service website. This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Design needs. Instead of emailing a PDF form for a request, the platform enables you to create new Engineering Judgment (EJ) requests, submit revisions to previously completed EJs or connect with an FPE on a question. HCP also enables you to track the status of your request.
You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: http://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or http://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) If you have any questions or require assistance navigating the platform, please call Customer Service for help at 1-800-879-8000 (US) or 1-800-363-4458 (Canada.)

Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below.

Hi, Are you able to provide an engineering judgement or solution for the condition where the gypsum board meets the concrete slab?

Hello Melissa - yes, this should be possible. Please provide a good cross-sectional detail and/or site picture when you submit the request through HCP. Thank you!
