I am trying to provide direction to a contractor on a proper anchor bolts to secure a grade 70 carbon steel surge tank with an empty weight of 11,352 lbs that holds about 2117 gallons of water. They have requested to use a HAS rod anchor. Is this an appropriate application for this anchor? Additionally, could you please advise on coating for the bolts? I assume hot dipped galvanized carbon steel to ensure no corrosion but please confirm. The anchor rods will be embedded in concrete about 7" deep with Hilti RE-500 Epoxy
Hi Gwen,
For anchor product selection help, please see Hilti’s Anchor Product Technical Guide from Hilti's website. Below are quick links to sections of the Technical Guide:
- Anchor Selection Chart on pages 4-7 - a helpful comparison of Hilti's anchors
- Section 3.2 Adhesive Anchoring Systems starting on page 30
- Commonly considered ultimate-performance adhesive anchors for concrete are HIT-HY 200 V3 (fast cure) and HIT-RE 500 V3 (slow cure)
- This article differentiates slow and fast curing anchors
- HIT-RE 500 V3 Technical Data with HAS threaded rod
- HIT-HY 200 V3 Technical Data with HAS threaded rod
Please note that HIT-HY 200 V3 and HIT-RE 500 V3 are resistant to water once cured. However, if you are installing into
submerged conditions, only HIT-RE 500 V3 can be used. Additionally, HAS threaded rods are available in stainless steel grades 304 and 316.
Ultimately, all design decisions (including anchor selection and a proper coating for the bolts) are at the discretion of the Engineer of Record (EOR) on the project.
Regards,
Ashley
