What is required to clean threaded rods before installation?

While reviewing ESR-4868, section 3.2.5.2 says "Threaded steel rods must be clean..." What does "clean" mean for installation of the threaded steel rod? Is it just removing dirt and debris from the threads, or is more involved than that?

Hi Chad,

Hilti does not have a formal definition of what is considered a "clean" threaded rod, though the threads of the rod should be free of lubrication and damage. Ultimately, a threaded rod will be deemed clean at the discretion of the inspector or engineer on the project.

Thank you for the reply, and I understand what is clean is ultimately decided by the inspector. As a follow up question, what is meant by free of lubrication? I know some threaded rods have a light coating of oil from the fabrication process, similar to a regular plain bolt, but are otherwise clean and free from defects. Is that supposed to be removed before anchor installation? Is there a Hilti document I can reference to show that is a requirement?

Hi Chad,

Hilti unfortunately does not have any documentation stating the definition of "free of lubrication". What is considered a clean threaded rod will ultimately be at the discretion of the inspector or engineer on the project, based on Section 3.2.5.2 of ESR-4868.

Regards,
Matthew
