Through vs membrane penetrations

When selecting a firestop system, when something like a plumbing penetration does not align on each side of the wall/floor, does this change it from a through penetration to a membrane penetration even if it goes through the entire wall/floor?

Brian,

I want to make sure I am interpreting your question correctly--I believe you are asking if a pipe is considered a membrane penetration or through penetration if it enters one side of the wall, travels up or down for a period, then exits on the other side of the wall? If so, then Hilti would likely consider this a membrane penetration, as we understand many pipes that enter one side of the wall will eventually exit out the other side at a different elevation/floor. However, my recommendation would be to consult with your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to determine how they would like you to treat these penetrations, as your AHJ will be the ultimate decision maker on these conditions.

Thank you,
