Pull Test on Service anchors.

If a Hilti HIT HY270 anchor is not installed per Hilti specifications and the structure is already loaded with the proposed loading, then is it advisable to perform a pull test on these service anchors?

If not, what are our options?

Hi Ekata,

Since it is outside of Hilti's test data, we would recommend performing onsite testing. Ultimately, it is up to the engineer of record on the project to decide whether or not testing is necessary.

Thank you for your response. I would like to know if it is ok to test an existing Hilti which is currently supporting the proposed load? Would it compromise its strength if it passes the test?

Hi Ekata,

There are many different reasons for pull testing an anchor, as well as different loading considerations. Depending on the load you apply to the anchor, there could be failure or deformation of the anchor. Engineers will often specify pull testing anchors to a service load or percentage of a service load, and will still use the anchors after testing. If there are any visual signs of failure or deformation, it would not be recommended to use the anchor. Since the anchor in question is already under the expected service load, it is unlikely that pull testing to the same service load would result in anything different than the anchor is experiencing already. However, this is outside the scope of what Hilti can recommend. It will be up to the engineer of record to decide whether testing is required, and if the anchor is suitable for use after testing.

Dani
