POST-INSTALLED ANCHOR AT COLD JOINT?

POST-INSTALLED ANCHOR AT COLD JOINT?

Does Hilti have any guidance for anchors installed in close proximity to a concrete cold joint? The specific application we are considering is a post-installed anchor in a thickened slab adjacent to a blockout for a column. Once the diamond is filled with concrete, should the concrete cold joint be considered an edge for anchor design?

Hi Travis,

Hilti anchor testing is conducted in monolithic slabs only. Hilti does not have any specific testing with anchors installed near a cold joint. It is up to the engineer of record to determine if a cold joint should be considered an edge or not. There are two primary concerns when considering the installation an anchor close to a cold joint of a concrete slab. First, there may be issues in the installation process concerning concrete breakout near the cold joint. There is also the concern for concrete edge breakout or concrete pryout at the cold joint when shear loading is applied. Ultimately, all design decisions are at the discretion of the Engineer of Record (EOR) on the project. The engineer on the project should consider engineering judgment and on-site evaluation to verify the connection.

Best,
Emily
