Hilti Verified

Hi Danny,

There are two things that can happen when you over-torque an expansion anchor. Either you risk breaking the concrete/masonry base material, or you can break the anchor. Hilti tests the up to 1.3*Tinst (published installation torque) to verify these things do not occur, however if you exceed the maximum installation torque there is a risk one of these has happened. You can back off the initial torque and reapply the correct installation torque. If the anchor starts spinning in the hole and you are unable to get the anchor to "set" when torqueing, the anchor is damaged. It will be difficult to determine if there is any internal splitting in the block due to over-torqueing. Ultimately, it will be up to the engineer of record on the project to analyze and determine if the anchor should still be used since it was installed outside Hilti's installation instructions. Failures such as the anchor yielding and base material splitting can be difficult to determine.

Regards,
Dani
