Do EJs need to be sealed by an in-state engineer?
Hello Blaise! Thank you for checking out ASK Hilti!
Firestop engineering judgments (EJ) will typically fall under Section 104.11 of the International Building Code, which permits the use of alternative materials, designs and methods of construction where sufficient data is submitted to the building official to illustrate that an equivalent level of safety is maintained.
Section 104.11 will require approval of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) / building official. Because of this, some jurisdictions will require a PE stamp or other documentation other than the EJ itself to satisfy the above code section. We recommend working with your AHJ/building official to determine what may be required for EJ approval in your jurisdiction.
Thank you,
