Clarify rigidly supported on both sides of wall

System W-L-5240, Note #2 mentions " Pipe, conduit or tubing to be rigidly supported on both sides of wall assembly." If we apply this system to a penetration in a shaft by a duct pipe, it is not easy to install support inside the shaft.
Does the note literally require a support inside the shaft and a support outside the shaft? Could you clarify what does it meant to be rigidly supported on both sides of wall assembly.
Thank you in advance.

Greetings Mallory,
Thank you for using ASK Hilti!

The term “rigidly supported” means that the firestop system does not carry the load or the weight
of the penetrating items. The penetrating item is to be firmly fixed in place by a support system to minimize movement.

The UL Guide info XHEZ-Through-penetration Firestop Systems highlights the intent of the penetrating item to be supported:
“Where the individual system specifies the penetrating item is to be rigidly supported on both sides of wall or floor, the support system should be designed based upon the premise the firestop system provides no support.”

The firestop system listings do not provide the requirements for this support. The support requirements for the penetrating item are prescribed in the electrical, mechanical, or plumbing codes.

We hope this helps. If you have any further questions on the above, please reach out to our customer
