Cast-In Anchor Spacing

What controls the spacing of anchors? Hilti profis provides the warning that "anchors are too close to each other" but i cannot find what controls/defines this limit.

Hi Erika,

For ACI 318-14, spacing distance requirements when anchoring to concrete are laid out in section 17.7. For cast-in anchor spacing, see specifically section 17.7.1 which states that for cast-in anchors that will not be torqued the minimum spacing (center-to-center) between anchors is 4 times the diameter of the anchor (da) and for cast-in anchors that will be torqued the minimum spacing (center-to-center) between anchors is 6 times the diameter of the anchor (da).

If you are designing under ACI 318-11, then similar information can be found in section D.8.1.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Adam

Hello- Are anchor bolts usually torqued? Or would you consider them untorqued if the contractor is using a spud wrench? Maybe it depends on whether they are cast in or post installed as well. should this information be depicted on the drawings?

Hi Kaylea,

The type of anchor will depend on if the anchor is torqued or not. Information on required minimum installation torque can be found in the technical data for Hilti anchors in the Anchor Fastening Product Technical Guide.
