1 Hour Rated Fire Wall

1 Hour Rated Fire Wall

I actually have two questions.

We are doing a TI and need to separate the warehouse from the office area via 1 hour fire wall. I have a gap at the top of wall, between CMU and metal deck. Can we insert castle cut 5/8" GWB into the space and caulk the top and bottom of the GWB with fire caulk to achieve the one hour assembly? Or do we need to use mineral wool and fill the gap, spray and caulk?

One portion of the wall is only accessible on the warehouse side, as the offices are occupied, and we cannot disturb their side of the wall. How do we achieve a one hour wall assembly if we can only access one side of the wall? Will we need to build a shaft wall? Or is there another way?

Hello Tasha,

Thank you for using the Ask Hilti Tool!

For castle cut conditions where you have access to both sides of the wall, I've attached two systems that will work for your condition: HW-D-0077 & HW-D-0324.

For areas that you only have access to one-side of the wall, achieving a fire-rating with a standard gypsum wall is going to be a bit more challenging. If your gypsum wall is perpendicular to the flutes, we could provide an engineering judgment showing how to install firestop in order to achieve a rating although the installation method could be difficult. If the gypsum wall is parallel to the flutes, there will be no way to achieve a fire-rating with only one-side access. If you have a gypsum shaft wall, the attached system HW-D-0750 would be the best solution.

If you determine that you need an engineering judgment, please fill out and email the attached EJ Request Form with any additional details to usfirestopeng@hilti.com If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to call or email us.

Thank you for choosing Hilti as your firestop specialist and have a great day.
