Hilti Helps Plano Mayor Kick Off Summer Internship Program

Plano mayor announces summer internship program

Building a better future is at the heart of everything we do, and as part of our commitment to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, we’re focused on developing the leaders of tomorrow. That’s why Hilti is proud to support Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and host the kick off to the sixth annual Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program.

The program provides teens with life-changing, paid summer positions at top companies and nonprofits. The goal is to recruit businesses to provide at least 120 internships this summer to top-qualified sophomores and juniors who attend Plano ISD or reside in the City of Plano.

Inspired by Hilti’s worldwide reputation for pioneering products and exceptional service, mayor LaRosiliere used a toolbox theme to illustrate how the internship program equips high school students for professional careers.

“Thanks to the support of our corporate partners and the collaboration with Plano ISD over the past six years, the Plano Mayors Summer Internship program has evolved into a game changer as we prepare our youth for their future,” said Mayor LaRosiliere. “Industry leaders from across our city offer their time and expertise in shaping the future workforce, and in return they get a glimpse of our best and brightest.”

Mayor Harry, who grew up in Harlem, says he believes if a program like this would have existed when he was in high school, that he could have started his career four or five years ahead because of the life skills taught in internships.

The year after relocating its corporate headquarters to Plano in June 2015, Hilti saw the great success of the program and became involved. So far, Hilti has provided a total of 13 internships.

“We’ve witnessed firsthand the amazing growth and development that occurs when you place high school students into a professional workplace,” said Senior Vice President Legal & General Counsel Kelly Beaver. “As a Hilti intern last year, Pranay Dhondi, was indispensable in the success of our strategy to reach every single VIP customer in the Central Market Organization.”

The program provides a “learn-and-earn” opportunity that teaches students essential workforce skills while providing connections to future employers. In its six-year history, the program has more than tripled in size – growing from just 37 interns in 2014 to 123 interns in 2018.

The mayor is also proud to see the innovative “teacher externship” program continue to evolve for a third year. This initiative places Plano educators into corporate environments, ultimately expanding and enhancing their classroom instruction.
